recovering harddisk from virus without formatting?

    I heard from some of my friends that the hard disk got infected from the virus,can be cured without formating the drive.but they didn't told me the way to do it.Is it really possible to do so??If it is really possible how we can do it???

    Scanning it with Anti Virus should be the other option than formating.

    S. Its possible. first let me know wat type of virus u re affected with? If its boot sector virus, u need an advance recovery software. If its any other u can do with ease.

    thanks for your quick response.
    suppose if it's any virus other than boot sector virus,then how can we remove it using registry..can u telll me in detail?

    U just install a good antivirus and run a scan. that will get rid of almost all viruses. U can also remove it from registry, but it won't go out of the hard disk. It just stops executing itself at the system startup.
    to deleted the startup entry from registry
    Code:
    HKLM\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run
    HKCU\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run
    HKCU\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\runonce
    
    or else u can delete that by opening msconfig.

    So, obviously the easiest way is to instal an antivirus.

    No removing from the registry entry manually would not help because I have tried this before and exe if running in the background would be constantly monitoring that and as soon as they are not there would write it down again.

    Now stopping the exe would not be possible and if you kill the exe it would start the process before getting stopped and so that would again keep the exe running.
